I'm really annoyed at the number of times I've bought a DVD, and found they never deactivated the security device that prevents you opening the case.

That must be an Australian thing, I guess. Our security devices just keep us from walking out the door if still activated.

Can you describe the apparatus?

It's a locking magnetic strip inside the DVD case; you need to place it in a special device to "click" the strip into place to allow it to be opened, and then the strip removed.
